Things that Surprised Me About Thailand

Image
One year ago today, I landed in Bangkok and began my six-month journey around Southeast Asia — and, though I didn’t know it yet, a life of full-time travel. I had prepared for Thailand — I had read the guidebooks, perused the photo galleries, and had read hundreds of blog posts on the country.   But no matter how much you prepare, there are so many things that you won’t know until you arrive and experience it yourself. Like the following: 7-Elevens are everywhere. Think McDonald’s is the most common chain in Thailand?  Think again.  In a two-block radius from my guesthouse near Khao San Road, there were five or six 7-Elevens. It’s actually pretty convenient because they sell everything, from 50-cent Red Bull to red bean paste-stuffed cakes.  I ended up in 7-Eleven a few times on most days! Thais love their cover songs. I was in Thailand five times in total in the last year — and each time, I knew I hadn’t officially arrived until ...

Month 23: Travel Summary and Statistics

Image
This month has been all about changes, and I’ve certainly been going through a few. After giving up on my travel plans for the next six months and heading to Thailand, I knew that I needed to stop moving so fast. The subsequent month in Chiang Mai was therefore perfect. I ate great food, was inspired by fellow digital nomads and got tons of work done — all while recovering from the past few months of fast-paced travel. A month feels like the perfect amount of time for me to spend in a place — it’s enough time to start to get to know a city, to discover new favourite restaurants. It gives me enough time to work without feeling rushed and I get to leave looking forward to returning in the future. I was therefore extremely excited when we decided to spend this month living in Saigon — one of my favourite cities in the world. A gorgeous sunset after arriving in Saigon. This was a huge mistake. Dave and I messed up and it’s left us both wishing we...

Month 16: Travel Summary and Statistics

The last month has been all about being cursed. I spent the majority of my time in Cambodia, and while I’ve had a truly incredible time here, I’ve had more than my fair share of struggles too. Upon entering the country, I paid for a visa that they forgot to put in my passport, I was then sent upstairs at the airport to a darkened room because they thought I was a transit passenger and then they lost my departure card and stapled someone else’s to my passport. And so the curse began… After a few days of catching up on work in Phnom Penh, I decided to head straight down to the coast. I had planned to spend my month relaxing on a beach in Cambodia and I found the perfect place in Sihanoukville. Otres Beach was Southeast Asian beach paradise I had been hunting for in Thailand and was unable to find. It was cheap, it was quiet, there were hardly any touts, there was fast wifi and I was living in an adorable bungalow on the beach, ten metres away from the ocean....

Bangkok’s Khao San Road

Image
(This post may contain affiliate links, for more information read this  privacy policy ) If there is one street in Bangkok that you might have heard of then this would definitely be Khao San Road. Located a few kilometres outside of reach of the skytrain and subway and best accessible by Tuk Tuk, it used to be a major rice market back in its days. Nowadays it is mostly known for cheap accommodation, food and a place for backpackers to get wasted. During the day Bangkok’s Khao San Road is just a short street with loads of souvenir stands, little shops, restaurants and beauty saloons. It is not far away from several temples such as Wat Intharawihan or Wat Pho, which is better known under the name Temple of reclining Buddha, and also only a short Tuk Tuk ride away from the Grand Palace. There are definitely some attractions surrounding the area but this is not the main reason why backpackers like to stay in walking distance to Khao San Road....

Best Things to Buy in Thailand

Everyone loves picking up souvenirs from their trips, but there is often an overwhelming amount of knick-knacks to choose from and, if you’re going in unprepared, you probably don’t know what’s worth buying. Here are a few ideas of cool things to buy in Thailand, either as souvenirs and reminders of your trip or as gifts for your friends and family upon your return.   Silk   Silk is one of the most popular Thai souvenirs and is definitely worth bringing back from your trip. Thai silk is made from the strands of silkworms that have been fed on a strict diet of mulberry leaves, which is hand-woven to create silky smooth pieces in a variety of bright colors and patterns. Silk can be found everywhere in Thailand, but you should be wary of the silk sold at markets, as this is often very low-quality or fake silk made from polyester. While any textile can be a lovely souvenir and the cheaper options may be preferable, if you’re looking for quality Thai silk, head to a Jim Thompso...
