I’m rolling August and September together for this monthly summary because, um, I barely stepped outside in August and didn’t have anything interesting to write about. I kicked off August with a commitment to insomnia. Back at the start of the year, I set myself a goal to wake at 4 a.m. every morning for an entire month. I thought it would be a fun experiment that would teach me a lot about how I work. Everyone from Richard Branson to Tim Cook to Michelle Obama gushes about the benefits of early rising, and I wanted to see if I could hack it, too. This month has been all about changes, and I’ve certainly been going through a few. After giving up on my travel plans for the next six months and heading to Thailand, I knew that I needed to stop moving so fast. The subsequent month in Chiang Mai was therefore perfect. I ate great food, was inspired by fellow digital nomads and got tons of work done — all while recovering from the past few months of fast-paced travel. A month feels like the perfect amount of time for me to spend in a place — it’s enough time to start to get to know a city, to discover new favourite restaurants. It gives me enough time to work without feeling rushed and I get to leave looking forward to returning in the future. The last month has been all about being cursed. I spent the majority of my time in Cambodia, and while I’ve had a truly incredible time here, I’ve had more than my fair share of struggles too. Upon entering the country, I paid for a visa that they forgot to put in my passport, I was then sent upstairs at the airport to a darkened room because they thought I was a transit passenger and then they lost my departure card and stapled someone else’s to my passport. And so the curse began… After a few days of catching up on work in Phnom Penh, I decided to head straight down to the coast. I had planned to spend my month relaxing on a beach in Cambodia and I found the perfect place in Sihanoukville. Otres Beach was Southeast Asian beach paradise I had been hunting for in Thailand and was unable to find. It was cheap, it was quiet, there were hardly any touts, there was fast wifi and I was living in an adorable bungalow on the beach, ten metres away from the ocean....
