How to Visit Los Refugios de Guerra Civil, Almería

Image
During my first class as an English teacher in Almeria, the students practiced speaking English by telling me the best things to do, and they mentioned making a visit to Los Refugios de Guerra Civil. I’m a sucker for visiting anything historical and war-related, no idea why, so I really wanted to go and see these civil war shelters of Almería. I’ve been constantly fascinated by the amount of history and unique things to do in Almeria. This part of Andalucia doesn’t seem to get as many visitors as the rest, and I love exploring and being able to show people what they’re missing! Los Refugios Almeria seems to always have tourists, but mainly from the rest of Spain. So I’ve decided to share what I’ve learned from visiting the civil war air raid shelters in Almeria, not least because hardly anyone seems to know about them outside of here. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of information in English about Los Refugios in Almeria, so I decided it was time to change that, and I’ve put togeth...

Discovering Nearby Places: One Day in Nerja, Spain

Image
I have a problem when I travel. Just like I can’t sit still normally, I also can’t just travel to one place. Going to just one place and returning home again seems like a waste to me. What if there’s somewhere else close by that’s worth seeing? I’d have to travel all the way back again which might never happen. I never noticed until I started blogging about some of my travels and a pattern started to emerge. When I went to Norway for Easter it was Oslo and Bergen, for an Eastern European Christmas it was Prague and Dresden, and then I went for the triple whammy of Liverpool, Manchester and the Lake District all in one. So when I had a long weekend break from teaching English in the south of Spain, I decided to go to no less than 3 places in those 5 days! Summer was definitely on it’s way to Almería with the temperature pushing 20 degrees as I sweated my way to the bus station. I managed to confidently walk in the wrong direction for 20 minutes and once...

What is happening with Airbnb in Spain?

Image
You may have heard the rumours about Airbnb in Spain and problems with short-term apartment rental. A big influx in tourist apartments being made available online has meant booking companies like Airbnb being blamed for over tourism. There has been some press coverage and lots of opinions on social media but to be honest it left me feeling pretty confused. I don’t know about you but I just couldn’t make sense of what was happening with Airbnb in Spain. I have used short-term rental websites like Airbnb and Booking.com many times. I think it’s a great way for travellers to find affordable accommodation and for landlords to advertise their rental property. I also hope to buy a property in Spain in the near future and have considered the possibility of renting it out as a side income. So, I thought I should look into things a little further and find out exactly what’s happening with this so called “crack down” on holiday rentals through Airbnb in Spain. Short-term property rental in Sp...

Park Guell in Barcelona – Another masterpiece by Gaudi!

Image
Half a century before the first Disneyland in the world built (1955), Gaudi had already envisioned a themed park experience – Park Guell. Designed by Antoni Gaudi, Park Güell was a project that took 14 years to be constructed, beginning in 1900. Which means, more than 100 years ago from now, Gaudi already had this park’s vision, for Barcelona visitors. The difference is, Park Guell was originally intended to be private property for rich people. That didn’t take off according to plans, somehow. In 1922, the City Council purchased Park Güell and opened it as a municipal park in 1926. Park Güell is such an artistic park! A colorful, creative and artistic place, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.  Park Güell  offers impressive vantage points with splendid views of the sea and the Plain of Barcelona. You need to see it! Park Güell was designed to feature four broad themes. Did you know that? I didn’t! The 4 themes were meant to be experienced progressivel...

Exploring Ronda, Spain’s Spectacular Cliffside City

Image
It’s no secret the three months I spent writing my book in Granada were some of the toughest of my life. And, confession time: it was during those dark days that I developed an obsession with Pinterest. I’d set myself a target to write/edit a thousand words and then allow myself a small escape to pin photos of the pretty places I’d visit once it was all over. It was through Pinterest that I discovered Ronda, one of the oldest cities in Spain, and conveniently, a three-hour train ride from Granada. What it’s most well known for, though, is its stunning cliffside location. And when I say cliffside, I mean cliffside . Yup . So when I handed in the first draft of my manuscript, I celebrated the momentous occasion the only way I know how: by booking a trip. I packed my daypack and hit the rails with Dave, hoping that Ronda would bring me the rest and relaxation I’d been craving. I wanted to be outside. To wander down tiny alleyways and take photos of beaut...
