Family Road Trip through North Cascades National Park

Image
Glacier-clad peaks, virgin forests, vast turquoise lakes, and sub-alpine meadows, North Cascades National Park is a gem of a wilderness — one that is often overlooked by tourists and revered by rugged adventurers. The park is isolated, encompassing 360 miles of trails, an incredible array of wildlife, and innumerable waterfalls (hence the lovely name of the park). The Cascade Range extends from British Columbia to Northern California, with just one paved road embarking into the heart of its untamed wilderness. If you’re an avid hiker or backpacker, you’ve no doubt been seduced by these mountains, but this post is for the road tripper, the casual hiker, and the family adventurer. If you’ve never journeyed through North Cascades National Park, it’s time to make amends. Getting to North Cascades National Park There are major airports in both Bellingham and Seattle, Washington. From Bellingham, the entrance to the park is about an hour and a half drive....

Winter in Portsmouth, New Hampshire: A Perfect New England Getaway

Image
When February and March come around in New England, winter starts to get a little old, at least for me. I’m always tempted to cash in my chips and head somewhere warm and tropical, but this year, we opted for a little getaway within driving distance of home. Portsmouth, New Hampshire has long been known as a summer destination, with its proximity to the ocean, gorgeous public parks, and bustling downtown, but did you know that there are oodles of things to do in Portsmouth, NH in the winter? We were excited to find that Portsmouth’s draws don’t just disappear when the winter winds blow down Market Street. In fact, the town is as bright and bustling as ever. Sure, you have to bundle up, but there are numerous benefits to visiting this historic seaport in off season. My husband and I spent three days exploring Portsmouth and the surrounding communities in the middle of February. As is often the case, we tried our best to remain outside, first venturing around the histo...

Hiking Lord Howe Island – Must do hikes, views & attractions

Image
A bucket list destination you never knew you had, Lord Howe Island is one of Australia’s best kept secrets. Surrounded by crystal clear reef to snorkel in, Lord Howe is characterised by tropical heat, palm trees and volcanic mountains to hike. Sound idyllic? I promise you, this is a destination you’ll never want to leave. To help you plan your stay here, I’ve put together a list of the “must do” experiences on the island, covering the best hikes, viewpoints and attractions not to be missed! Mount Gower Undeniably the island’s most iconic hike is an all-day trek that starts early in the morning and finished some 8-10 hours later. Mount Gower must be hiked with a trained guide, not only because the trail is unmarked but also due to the sheer cliff faces you are about to look down over, hanging on to a rope and with a hard hat no less! As the highest point on the island and with panoramic views (often obstructed by clouds which only adds to ...

Visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Image
Harry Potter fans rejoice! I have finally made it to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter on my travels! For as long as I have known of its’ existence, I have wanted to step inside the Harry Potter theme park at Universal Studios in Orlando. While it is now my third visit to the USA, it has unfortunately taken me this long (22 years of living) to visit Orlando and finally have my day inside Diagon Alley and Hogsmead Village – but you know what they say, third time’s a charm! Luckily for me, the Hogsmeade Village recently expanded and I was able to visit at a very exciting time as the park is now offering more to visitors than it ever has before. So here’s a rundown of my day living out my dreams of being accepted to Hogwarts , shopping for school supplies in Diagon Alley , enjoying a butterbeer, shopping for sweets in Honeydukes and wandering through Hogsmeade Village on a rainy day. All in all it was THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE and it should go without saying t...
